Is exercise for everyone?

I heard the saying, “Only floss the teeth you want to keep.”  I assume that goes for brushing them too.

You say, I’m only a few pounds overweight and can still put on my socks.  I don’t need to be able to move furniture around or bench press the weight of a small child.

Muscle mass decreases over time with 3-8% per decade after age 30 and that rate is even higher after age 60.  The term “use it or lose it” is very real here to maintain muscle mass as you age.

They say walking is one of the best exercises which is something many people can do.  For some this occurs normally in the course of their work/home life.  Others will need to make a concerted effort as their desk and drive-thru routine doesn’t accommodate that lifestyle.

A couple more good quotes that apply here, “it’s never too late” and “the best time to start is now”.  Obviously, age will indicate what exercise and duration is a good starting point.

Many years ago, you could always find an excuse for not going to the health club.  Now with technology and all the various forms of exercise, most things can be done in your home.

You don’t want to say in ten years, I wish I exercised more than my TV remote arm and keyboard fingers.

I can’t promise instant muscles or that exercise will always be easy.  But I can promise you will feel better with daily activity and many years of strong mobility.

Just like a ship is built to be at sea and a house is constructed to be lived in, a body is made for movement.  So, to answer the original question, yes, whether you are 18 or 80 some form of exercise is necessary.

You will be glad you left the La-Z-Boy lifestyle behind.  With every new healthy habit that is adopted, a new one is sure to follow.  I’m not saying burn your furniture but if each night Netflix is asking, “Are you still watching?”, it’s time to get moving.
